We are fully capable of diagnosing, servicing, repairing the electrical side of things the engine side of things as well as verifying the generator is safe. We can also assist customers in what their generator is capable of. The 3 major causes of generator failure I see are poor storage, overload due to exceeding its capability and engine overheat and failure due to lack of maintenance. Like all outdoor power equipment, generators need proper service and maintenance done properly, routinely and using quality products. With homeowner generators this tends to be more of time based service and not running hours as they tend to do a lot more sitting then running. With contractors with heavy use I see many overheated generators with low hours simply due to lack of a particular or multiple maintenance items that are usually clearly outlined in every owners manual from every manufacturer. A typical generator service looks something like this and will vary slightly from machine to machine, any minor repairs will be made with in the service any major repairs outside the service are parts and labor based on manufacturer labor rate manuals. -Fuel system drain, flush, and fill with Sunoco optima 95 ethanol free fuel -Carburetor clean and repair -Oil change using small engine specific API rated CH-4, CJ-4 or CK-4 Oil with Zinc ZDDP anti-wear additives -Valve adjustments a commonly dismissed service item that can lead to catastrophic engine failure if not done as recommended in extreme cases (This is a break in period item) -Thorough cleaning including engine cooling fins, generator cooling fan, stator windings. and a general cleaning of the unit itself -Check and tighten bolts, loose bolts can lead to engine problems, excessive vibration and electrical failure. -Replace spark plug with a quality NGK -Clean or replace air filter -Clean or replace spark screen -Replace fuel filter -Test run, this starts with verifying grounds, neutrals, starting the machine making any fuel or rpm adjustments, verify voltage and frequency, adjust if necessary, load test and test of over all function and safety. -Start up services are $165.00 plus parts and product.
